Rio de Janeiro Supermarkets Register Increase in Sales

Vendas nos supermercados do Rio de Janeiro aumentam em junho, após leve recuo em maio
In June, Rio de Janeiro’s supermarket sector returned to significant growth following a slight decline in May. The result underscores the strength of the segment and its importance to the economy, even amid a challenging landscape for retail.
Data from the Monthly Survey of Trade (PMC), conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), show that supermarket sales in Rio de Janeiro grew by 5.7% in June, adjusted for inflation, compared to the same month in 2025.
Over the accumulated 12-month period, the sector also delivered positive results, with sales recording a real growth of 3.2% - also inflation-adjusted -compared to the previous period.
For Fábio Queiróz, president of ASSERJ and the Supermarket Association of Americas (ALAS), the figures demonstrate the sector’s capacity to adapt to changes and maintain positive performance even in the face of challenges confronting Brazilian retail.
“In addition to contributing to inflation control, the sector has been responding to shifts in consumer behavior with increasingly efficient strategies. Supermarket operators are investing in customer loyalty, adjusting their product mix and merchandise displays, and seeking new ways to meet customer needs. These movements show the sector's ability to adapt, overcome challenges, and keep moving forward, maintaining its relevance and contributing to economic development,” he highlighted.
