The program
The Rocinha favela is hosting the pioneering program De Olho no Lixo: transforming waste into art, culture and education, which encourages a change from the culture of garbage to the culture of waste. This means transforming an environmental problem into income generation, artistic production and education. The activities are the result of technical cooperation between Viva Rio, the State Environment Institute (INEA) and the State Environment Secretariat (SEA), with the support of the Rio de Janeiro State Supermarkets Association (ASSERJ).

How does it work?
Some of the waste produced is separated by the community, collected by socio-environmental agents and sent to the Rocinha Recicla Cooperative. The cooperative members advise residents on how to separate and dispose of their waste. The population's participation is fundamental.
